Cooperative Principle 5: Education, Training, and Information
So far in 2026, we have explored four of the seven cooperative principles that help guide electric cooperatives in serving their members and communities. In this issue, we turn to the fifth principle, Education, Training, and Information, which highlights the importance of continuous learning and open communication in building a strong, informed cooperative.
This principle is vital because it focuses on building the knowledge and skills of co-op employees and board members so they can effectively support the cooperative’s growth and success.
It emphasizes that members, elected representatives, directors, CEOs, and employees all benefit from education and training that helps them contribute to the development of their cooperatives. It also highlights the importance of sharing information about the nature and benefits of cooperatives with the public and community leaders to strengthen understanding of the cooperative model.
By investing in continuous learning for employees and board members, our co-op supports both individual growth and the long-term strength of the organization. That commitment helps us provide the high-quality service our members expect and deserve.
Just as important, we work to keep our members and the public informed about the co-op’s mission, services, and operations. That is one reason you receive Smart Choices and other regular communications sharing co-op news, updates, and helpful energy-efficiency and safety information.
Here are a few ways we put this principle into action:
- Monthly newsletters and Smart Choices
- Annual meetings and Member Appreciation Events
- Conferences and training opportunities
- Advocacy events with local, state, and federal legislators
- Electric safety education for our community and youth
- Advertising to promote cooperative programs, safety information, events, and brand awareness
The more you know about your co-op, the more connected you are to the people, programs, and services that support your community—and the better equipped you are to use the resources available through the cooperative you own.
